Had a loan via a subsidiary, Gateway One Lending. Paid on time, in full with $48 overpayment.
Was issued a check for the overpayment about 30-40 days after the account was paid off. Deposited it. A week later, it was returned in the mail along with a fee for $15 from my bank as being from a closed account.
Called. Was sent another check. From the same closed account number.
Called. The person I reached did not understand what I was explaining and kept telling me I was at fault for trying to cash a second check after depositing the first check. Over and over, putting me on hold to ‘review my account’ 3 times.
I called TCF directly as that was who issued the check. Talked to customer service. First, she said Gateway One was a customer and that TCF could not control if the account was closed or not. I told her I googled the address on the check and called the number that came up associated with that address.
Without me giving them the account number of my account or the check, I was then assured, “Oh, that account has been reopened and there is money in it! Is okay to cash now! Have a good day!”
