When Nancy and Dan Nemeth got married, their combined debts totaling $30,000, not including their car loan. Dan worked as a truck driver and when Nancy moved to Cleveland to be with him she was unemployed.
A friend liked handbags and clutches Nancy sewed and suggested she put them on Etsy. Now, she makes $2,500 in sales a month, half of which she uses to pay down debt. Between that and overtime by Dan, their debt has been whittled down to $10,000, plus about $8,000 on the car loan. In one year they will be debt free and start actually saving money, including for a dream trip to Europe.
But Etsy isn’t all they did to work on getting debt free:

They plan date nights well in advance so they have something to look forward to, and make choices to keep those costs down, like eating before going to the theater to avoid paying for expensive candy and popcorn.
In addition, Dan has recently started adding more to their debt paydown:
…finding a way to supplement their income has been the most important step towards climbing out of the hole they were in.
“I have always said do what you love, and if you can find a way, make some of that dream happen,” she said.
Her husband has gotten into the act, too. He recently went back to his old hobby performing comedy. He puts half his comedy income into paying down debt, too. Laughing together is helping their relationship, too.
